CIRCUIT DESIGN CONCEPT

  • The Signal Torch uses a simple series circuit.
  • The battery supplies electrical energy to the circuit. When the switch is turned ON, the circuit is completed and current flows through the resistor and LED.
  • Current Flow:

    Battery (+) → Switch → Resistor → LED → Battery (–)

  • The resistor is connected with the LED to help limit the current through the LED.
  • When the switch is OFF, the circuit is open and the LED does not glow.

PROCEDURE

Follow the steps below carefully to assemble the Signal Torch.

STEP 1

PREPARE THE CARDBOARD

  • Take a cardboard sheet.
  • Measure and cut 4 pieces of cardboard, each 10 cm × 4 cm.
  • These pieces will be used to make the rectangular body of the torch.

💡 TIP

  • Measure carefully before cutting so that all four pieces are the same size.

🔄 ALTERNATIVE

  • Thick cardboard or thermocol can be used to make a stronger body.

Step 1. Prepare the Cardboard

STEP 2

PREPARE THE BOTTLE COVER

  • Take a plastic bottle.
  • Carefully cut the top portion of the bottle.
  • Keep the cut portion safely for use as the front cover of the torch.

💡 TIP

  • Ask an adult for help while using a cutter or scissors.

🔄 ALTERNATIVE

  • A transparent plastic sheet can be used instead of the bottle portion.

Step 2. Prepare the Bottle Cover

STEP 3

MAKE THE RECTANGULAR TORCH BODY

  • Join the four 10 cm × 4 cm cardboard pieces.
  • Form them into a rectangular box.
  • Apply glue firmly along the edges.
  • Allow the glue to dry properly.

💡 TIP

  • Make sure the box is strong enough to hold the circuit, battery, and wires.

🔄 ALTERNATIVE

  • Tape can be used along the joints for additional strength.

Step 3. Make the Rectangular Torch Body

STEP 4

CONNECT THE LED AND RESISTOR

  • Take the LED and 1kΩ resistor.
  • Connect the resistor in series with the LED.
  • Identify the LED terminals before connecting.

LED Polarity:

  • Long leg = Anode (+)
  • Short leg = Cathode (–)
  • Connect the resistor to the LED circuit.

💡 TIP

  • Make sure the LED polarity is correct.
  • The resistor helps protect the LED by limiting current.

🔄 ALTERNATIVE

  • If soldering is not available, suitable insulated connections can be made using wires and properly secured joints.

Step 4. Connect the LED and Resistor

STEP 5

CONNECT THE SWITCH AND BATTERY

  • Connect the LED-resistor combination to the switch.
  • Connect the switch circuit to the battery connector.
  • Connect the battery connector to the battery.
  • Check that all wires are properly connected.

Circuit Connection:

Battery (+) → Switch → 1kΩ Resistor → LED → Battery (–)

💡 TIP

  • Keep the wires organized so that they do not get tangled inside the box.
  • Use insulation tape around exposed wire joints.

🔄 ALTERNATIVE

  • A battery holder can be used to keep the battery securely in place.

Step 5. Connect the Switch and Battery

STEP 6

INSTALL THE CIRCUIT INSIDE THE BOX

  • Place the completed circuit inside the rectangular cardboard box.
  • Make a suitable hole in the cardboard for the switch.
  • Fix the switch firmly in the hole.
  • Arrange the wires neatly.
  • Place the battery inside the box.
  • Cover the back using a 4 cm × 4 cm cardboard piece.

💡 TIP

  • Arrange the circuit neatly so that the components do not move around inside the box.

🔄 ALTERNATIVE

  • Small pieces of cardboard or foam can be used to hold the battery and components securely.
.

Step 6. Install the Circuit Inside the Box

STEP 7

ATTACH THE FRONT COVER

  • Take the previously cut plastic bottle portion.
  • Place it at the front of the torch.
  • Position it so that it covers and protects the LED.
  • Fix it securely using glue or tape.

💡 TIP

  • Keep the LED properly aligned with the transparent bottle portion so that light can pass through easily.

🔄 ALTERNATIVE

  • A transparent plastic sheet can be fixed over the LED as an alternative front cover.

Step 7. Attach the Front Cover

STEP 8

TESTING THE SIGNAL TORCH

  • Connect the battery.
  • Turn the switch ON.
  • Check whether the LED glows.

Expected Result:

  • Switch OFF → LED OFF
  • Switch ON → LED ON

If the LED does not glow, check:

  • LED polarity
  • Battery connection
  • Switch connection
  • Loose wires
  • Resistor connection
  • Battery condition

💡 TIP

  • Test the circuit before permanently fixing all the components inside the torch.

🔄 ALTERNATIVE

  • A different LED colour can be used to create a different signal effect.

Step 8. Testing the Signal Torch

WORKING PRINCIPLE

The Signal Torch works by using a closed electrical circuit. When the switch is turned ON, the circuit is completed.

Current Flow:

Battery (+) → Switch → Resistor → LED → Battery (–)

Electrical current flows from the positive terminal of the battery through the switch, resistor, and LED, and returns to the negative terminal of the battery.

The LED converts electrical energy into light energy, producing illumination. When the switch is turned OFF, the circuit becomes open and current stops flowing, so the LED turns OFF.

This project demonstrates:

  • Current flow
  • Open and closed circuits
  • Switch operation
  • LED polarity
  • Current limiting using a resistor
  • Conversion of electrical energy into light energy

FINAL RESULT

A functional Signal Torch is created using a cardboard body, LED, resistor, switch, battery, wires, and a transparent plastic bottle cover.

When the switch is turned ON, the LED glows and provides light. The torch can also be used as a simple signalling device in dark conditions.
